Stand Alone Pieces

These artworks are not part of a collection but are equally special. Many were created when I was either needing a refresh before continuing a collection or when I felt inspired by something specific.

Each piece has its own story.

Crow

40x32cm, watercolour with white and black ink. Sold.

I love to walk my dog in a patch of woods near our home in Dundee. We live near the city, but you would never know once you disappear up into the trees. All you can hear are the birds and the crunch of leaves underfoot. Occasionally, you'll hear the bark of a dog playing in the grassy park below. Tucked away in the woods, there's an overlook that has beautiful views over the city to the Tay River.

The overlook has two benches and a couple old sandstone plinths. These benches are one of my favourite places to sit and listen to the sounds of nature. Along with the squirrels in the trees, which my dog loves to watch, you can almost always find a crow perched on one of the plinths.

I was inspired to paint this artwork as a reminder not only of the peaceful feeling of sitting at the lookout but also of the mystery and beauty of the crows that often sit with me.

Sunflower for Ukraine

32x24cm, watercolour and white and black ink. Available.

As you may be able to guess from the title, I created this artwork to raise awareness and funds for the war in Ukraine. I chose the sunflower for multiple reasons. First, it is the national flower of Ukraine. Second, it is a beautiful yellow that can be put against a blue background to make it the colours of the Ukrainian flag. And third, because of a powerful story I saw on social media where a Ukrainian woman offered a Russian solder a handful of sunflower seeds, saying, "Put these in your pockets so that, when you die, sunflowers will grow where you lay." I can't say whether that is a true story, but it inspired me to use the sunflower in this painting.

All proceeds from the sale of this painting will go directly to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.
